A V60 filter coffee with mug and Mozzo coffee

Always wanted to know how to make a V60 coffee at home? We break it down for you in this simple guide. You’ll learn how to use a V60 filter paper, to nailing the ideal V60 coffee steeping time. A coffee brewing method we love as it typically produces a beautifully clean cup of coffee in a reasonably quick time.

Step 1: Boil your water

Start out by boiling your water. It will need to sit for a moment to ensure it comes down to the optimum temperature for brewing coffee - between 92 - 96’C.

Top Tip: We recommend using filtered water to extract the best flavours from your coffee.

Step 2: Rinse the filter & pre-heat your cup

Pop your filter paper into your V60 and give it a quick rinse with freshly boiled water. This step will remove any potential papery taints and open up the fibres of the paper, allowing for better extraction of your coffee. Pop some hot water into your cup or decanter, dispose of it once the vessels are warm.

Top Tip: Pour over methods are known to lose a fair amount of heat during the brewing process so preheating your cup/decanter will help to prevent a large drop in temperature.

Step 3: Weigh & grind coffee

Weigh 16 to 18g of coffee and grind it to a medium grind size similar in consistency to caster sugar (if not already pre-ground).

Step 4: Bloom the coffee

Place your ground coffee into the filter paper and pour about 45 to 50ml of water over it, trying to cover all coffee grinds evenly. Start your timer from the moment the water hits the coffee.

Did you know? This initial step is known as “blooming”. It saturates the coffee grinds, making them expand and release CO2, thereby facilitating better and more even extraction, making better tasting coffee!

Step 5: Pour & enjoy

Allow the coffee to bloom for 30 seconds, then add the rest of the water in 2 doses of about 100ml each. Pause for 10 seconds between each 100ml dose to allow a portion of the water to pass through the grinds. While pouring, make sure to maintain a consistent circular motion to agitate the coffee grinds and enhance the brewing process.

V60 Coffee

Developed by the Japanese company Hario in 2004 to offer a more nuanced and controlled coffee brewing experience, the V60 is a great introduction for those looking to have complete control over their coffee extraction process. Innovative and versatile, this brewing method allows you to perfect your pour by experimenting with different grind sizes, coffee doses, water temperatures and brew times. With a little bit of practice and tweaking, you can craft a coffee that is uniquely tailored to your taste preferences. Now, let’s brew the perfect cup of coffee the Mozzo way.

Personalise your cup of coffee:

Manipulating the grind size and dose will extract different flavours from your coffee. Personalise your Brew to your taste with these tips:

Adjust your grind: Coarser grinds will produce a lighter-bodied brew, while finer grinds will give you a fuller-bodied coffee.

Adjust your dose: by changing the dose of coffee you use, you can adjust the strength of your coffee to your liking.
